What We've Been Up To

Hi everybody! It’s been a couple of weeks since you last heard from us. We apologize for not uploading any original content for these past three weeks – we have been working diligently to visit new businesses and create new content. If you haven’t already noticed, we’ve also made some upgrades to the website. It looks much nicer now and you can now create your own Sweet Home Michiana profile. We hope to keep growing our audience, so please spread the word!

In the past week, we have gone to three different restaurants in the South Bend area and focused on three different categories – lunch, dinner, and dessert.  We plan on driving out to other cities and towns in Michiana, but we have been staying close to home and playing it safe due to COVID-19.

For lunch: South Blend Café – 237 N. Michigan St. South Bend, IN 46601

South Blend Café is tucked away in the northern part of downtown South Bend inside of the newly developed LaSalle Building. It is located next door to the Morris Performing Arts Center. Amy, the owner, suggested that we try their Trendy Pizza – South Blend’s take on buffalo chicken pizza. We also ordered:

  • A classic panini – turkey, bacon onion chutney, avocado, Swiss cheese, ranch dressing, lettuce, and tomato
  • Chicken BLT salad – grilled chicken breast, spinach, lettuce, croutons, and warm bacon vinaigrette dressing

The food was delicious and since it was a nice day outside when we went, we decided to sit at one of the tables in the John R. Hunt Plaza and had a mini picnic. South Blend is a great place to grab a quick bite at before heading into work in the morning or on your lunch break.

For dinner: Center Stage Pizza – 428 Lincoln Way W. South Bend, IN 46601

Center Stage is a pizzeria that has been open for almost one year now, located a few blocks west of DTSB. Doug, their owner, informed us that he makes his dough in-house every day and the highest quality of ingredients to ensure the freshest and the best taste possible. Doug has worked in the music industry for most of his life, so the décor inside the restaurant is a nod to music culture, creating a cozy dining environment. They also offer delivery and take-out options. Center Stage’s focal point is the eight different specialty pizzas they offer – they are unlike any pizza that you’ve probably ever had. We ordered:

  • Garlic bread – so simple yet so good
  • The Walkin’ On Sunshine – white sauce, bacon, sausage, onions, red bell peppers, sunny-side-up eggs, basil, and pico de gallo

This was honestly one of the best pizzas we’ve ever had. The combination seemed odd when we first read it on the menu, but it all comes together like a symphony. Center Stage also offers two dessert pizzas on the menu. If you enjoy pizza and music, we recommend that you stop by Center Stage to eat some delicious pizza and chop it up with Doug about his time as an audio engineer, producer, or when he saw AC/DC perform at Notre Dame on three separate occasions.

For dessert: Dari Fair4012 Lincoln Way E. Mishawaka, IN 46544

According to our Mishawaka friends, Dari Fair is an institution. We first heard of Dari Fair when a video detailing the preparation of their new turtle ice cream cone was uploaded to their Facebook page and went viral. In the video, the worker puts caramel syrup into the vanilla soft serve, dips the cone in chocolate, and then rolls the cone in chopped pecans. We have seen comments on social media from patrons that have driven from Wisconsin to Mishawaka just to try the turtle cone.

When we showed up, there was a line of about 10 people waiting to place their orders, even though it was 9 PM. This place was packed, and it made sense why. The turtle cone was incredible, and we can’t say enough good things about it – you simply have to try it for yourself. In case that you want to try something different, they also offer 35+ different flavors of ice cream. The shop is located right next to the City of Mishawaka’s Twin Branch Park, where you can go on a stroll as you eat your ice cream.

Where should we go to next week? Let us know!

Stay tuned on Sweet Home Michiana! We will be posting an article highlighting our friends at River Bend Apparel and Promotinos and how they are helping other small businesses in the area and uplifting other woman entrepreneurs in Michiana
